COMPA (UK)
Compa rose to fame in 2011 following his infamous bootleg of Mavado’s ‘Dem A Talk’, completely self-released on vinyl it went on to sell out worldwide in a single week. Soon after, and at just 21 years of age, he'd been signed to Mala's Deep Medi Musik - perhaps the most revered seal of approval in true dubstep circles. In a review of that record, Boomkat described Compa as the "keeper of dubstep's darkest light". After signings to other respected labels such as Boka Records, Artikal Music and Kokeshi, his follow-up on Deep Medi Musik was titled ‘Truth In Sound’ - an insight as to his mission within the music.
Compa launched his own imprint CPA Records last year, featuring a collaboration with grime pioneer Footsie of the infamous Newham Generals, with the aim of further diversification as a producer and label boss. Mixmag described the release as a "hard-as-nails war dub" which "combines elements of grime and bass". With a sound that is perpetually nostalgic, yet equally refreshing and heavy enough to shock the toughest of sound systems, Compa’s music displays a binary relationship between foundation sound homage and perpetual forward motion in thought. Spacious textures, heavily built sub-frequencies and intricate execution of minimalism are but a few hallmarks of his ever-evolving repertoire.
Compa’s productions have received acclaim and support from revered tastemakers such as Mary Anne Hobbs, Gilles Peterson, BBC Radio 1’s Toddla T and 1Xtra's MistaJam, reggae and soundclash legend David Rodigan, drum and bass leading lights Chase and Status, dubstep don Mala and grime aficionado Sir Spyro among others. Since Compa's debut tour of North America in 2014 he has toured the globe extensively reaching Australia and New Zealand again this year as well as Outlook Festival in Croatia, Echo Park festival in Shanghai and Webster Hall in NYC. Compa’s trajectory continues to go from strength to strength, recently launching his club brand Compa Presents on Boiler Room TV to a live audience of over 100,000 viewers. A connoisseur of sound, Compa remains true to the roots of the genre and is one of the only remaining 100% vinyl and dubplate DJs on the international circuit.
