Taimatangi: The Lost Diaspora is a photographic anthology created by Lady Shaka (Shakaiah Perez) that explores Afro Pacific narratives and their contribution to conversations related to diaspora and identity. Named after her grandfather Taimatangi Mikaele Perez who was of Cape Verdean and Tokelauan descent, this photo series explores the idea of Afro Pacific futurism, the importance of food within these communities and how food can be used to convey a story or an idea.
Oro: Ancestral Sounds of the Pacific is a musical anthology that focuses on the development of Pacific sound to create and bring Pacific musical sanctuary to the masses. Over the last few months Lady Shaka has worked with indigenous musicians Salvador Brown, Eimana Jonnassen, Jarome Pare and Hira Moewaka learning about the instruments of the Pacific and how they are being used in this modern age.
The exhibition itself will feature both photographic art from Taimatangi: The Lost Diaspora and sound art created in collaboration with Soraya La Pread and Infrequent Flyer (Kamal Sunker) as apart of Oro: Ancestral Sounds of the Pacific. We invite you to come down for a kai/ inu and to experience these different forms in a space where talanoa/discussion around the work is welcome.
