“if the youngns ain’t eating right something has to be done“

For the first in our series of lockdown era interviews with our Neck of the Woods community, we talk with Ti-Maya aka Nauti who has played huge shows at NOTW with central Auckland hiphop group Omni Potent and has been spending lockdown finishing off his solo album.

What’s keeping you busy during isolation?

Wassup yo! I been spending my lockdown  writing music, working out at the bars down at St. Paul’s and maintaining my routines and good habits I had set prior.

What podcasts, apps, books, live-streams, TV series etc have been keeping you sane?

Usually I ain’t too keen on TV shows but my flat been watching 90 day fiancé and I gotta say shit is hilarious!!

What are you looking forward to the most as we move into lower levels of lockdown?

Quarantine didn’t really change much for me besides keeping me from seeing friends and family so I’m defs looking forward to catching up with my whānau.

Over the last year and a half I’ve  removed my self from the scene. I been spending my time fine tuning and developing certain sounds I’ve dabbled with in the past, so to have this extra time on my hands has helped me finish my album and whole lot of old ideas. I’m looking forward to taking over C.A soon as everything is up and running ... it’s been a minute.

A lot of people are seeing the changes brought about by isolation and lockdown as an opportunity to enact some positive evolution not just at a personal level but at a community level. What sort of positive change are you hoping for in our local music scene?

I’m hoping to see more unity and support in all areas, financially and emotionally. We needa move like a tribe if the youngns ain’t eating right something has to be done.

We bout to hit the equivalent of the 90s in New York scene wise.

I’m so excited to see the power of hip hop fully kick in here in New Zealand.

Lastly, do you have any personal lockdown survival tips you can share with our community?

We lucky surviving in NZ is a breeze  so I ain’t got too many tips cause they all a no brainer. But few things I noticed is it’s key to keep communication at a high with ya flatties cause being cooped up like a chicken gon lead to dramas. And regardless if it’s quarantine or not get up off yo ass and spend at LEAST 2 hours in the sun, go for a walk / run, lift weights n get hench. Whatever it is do somthing cause life is too precious!

Love and light y’all
